Dialog box “Adding/Properties of scale bar”

Purpose

The dialog box serves for setting displaying parameters of scale bar which shows theme displaying scale.

Panes

Presentation

Permits choosing one of the three variants of scale bar representation:

Numerical – this is not a bar at all, but display of theme scale. Displaying format depends on the name of displayed units set in the corresponding pane.

Scale – the scale which contains line segments alternating in color with numeric marks is displayed. The scale is divided into two non equal parts: smaller segments are shown to the left of zero, bigger ones – to the right.

Split scale – differs from the previous variant only in the presence of the second, inverse display of scale.

Round values

The checkbox turns on the mode of rounding numbers when displaying numeric values corresponding to scale points. Rounding precision is specified in the field to:

Style

A dialog box “Scale bar style” is opened which permits specifying displaying style for scale and numeric marks.

Map units

Serves for specifying real length corresponding to the unit of coordinate system of the map on the basis of which the theme is built.

Name of used unit of length can be entered manually in the field Unit or selected in the drop-down list. When choosing a name in the list the corresponding value is automatically entered into the field Cm per unit. For non-standard units it is possible to enter the value of this unit in centimeters.

Displayed units

Serves for determining the units of length in which numeric values on the scale bar will be displayed. This pane contains the same two fields as the pane Map units.

Selected name of displayed unit of length will be shown to the right of the scale.

If the radio button Numerical is selected in the pane View and “cm” is selected as a displayed unit, the scale is displayed in the form of ratio of numbers without indication of units, for example, “1:500”. In the case of selecting a different displaying unit (for example, “m”), the scale is displayed with indication of units: “1 cm : 5 m”.

Intervals

Determines number and size of scale graduations. There are two possibilities:

Specify the graduation size (in displayed units). To do this the radio button Calculate automatically to the left of the field Number should be checked and then the necessary size should be entered into the field Value. The biggest integer number of ruler points which will fit into the specified rectangle of the scale bar with the specified graduation size will be drawn (thus, the ruler may happen to be a bit shorter than the specified rectangle).

Specify the number of points. For this purpose the radio button Calculate automatically to the left of the field Value should be checked and the required number of points should be entered in the field Number. The length of the ruler will fully coincide to the specified rectangle, however, the size of the point can be fractional. To avoid display of long fractions it is possible to use the mode of rounding values.

In the field Number of points the number of points of the ruler to the left of zero is indicated. The total size of all the points is always equal to one point of the right part of the ruler.
