Selecting features by selected records

Commands described in this subsection can be considered to be opposite with respect to the ones described above. They allow the user to pass from selected records of a linked table to the features with which these records are linked.

Let one or several records be selected in the browser window of a linked table. It doesn't make any difference which method was used for selection – manual or using the command Theme+Select Linked Records or a combination of the two methods. There are two commands selecting features on the basis of selected records: Theme+Select Features and Theme+Show Features.

The menu command Theme+Select Features (or the toolbar button ) performs selection of features linked with the selected records. The user should select one of the five possible variants of the operation of selecting features in the nested menu. These variants are similar to the ones described in chapter 13 “Feature selection”, the linked features play the role of features selected for participating in the operation:

After performing the command Theme+Select Features a map browser window is activated since the user most probably would like to work with selected linked features in this window.

The system does not provide any guarantees that all the selected linked features fall into displayed fragment. To see all of them simultaneously it is possible to use the menu command Selection+Show All in the map browser window.

If several feature types are linked with the browsed table, the system opens a dialog box “Select feature type” first in which the user should select one of the linked types.

The menu command Theme+Show Features (or the toolbar button ) also allows selection and browsing of linked features, but not all of them at once, as in the previous command, but by turn.

When this command is performed, the map browser window is activated, and one of the linked features is selected in it. If necessary, shift of displayed fragment is automatically performed so that the selected feature was seen.

The message about selected features which is located in the left part of the information bar is slightly changed. In the mode of displaying linked features it looks approximately like this: “Selected: 1 (3 of 8)”. It should be understood in this way: one feature is selected, it is the third from eight features linked with records selected in the table browser window.

To browse the remaining linked features it is possible to use the menu commands of the map browser window Feature+Previous Linked and Feature+Next Linked or the toolbar buttons and corresponding to them. Linked features will be selected one after another, if necessary displayed fragment will be shifted.

The following situation may arise: when there is one or several linked features for selected record, however, displaying of all these features or some of them is disabled by theme filter (see chapter 34 “Filters and their structure”, subsection “Theme filter”). If display of all linked features is disabled, when the system performs the menu command Show Features, a message will be displayed “In the current state of browsing theme there are no features linked with selected records”. If some of the linked features are displayed in the theme, the commands Previous Linked and Next Linked permit the user to select any of these features, however, in the status bar the number of the feature and quantity of linked features are indicated without taking into account filter action (that is, including non-displayed features).
