After creating a map, the user should determine the structure of components (of layers and feature types) from which the map is made. For this purpose there is the menu command Edit+Add, examined before, but this time it is applied to the list of layers and feature types of each layer accordingly.
To add a layer to the map first of all one should make sure that the command Edit+Add is applied to the layer (and not to the map or feature type). To provide this one layer should be selected in one of the two panes of navigation windows. When the map doesn't have any layers the user should select a map in hierarchical pane and activate the empty pane of the layer list (by clicking this pane). Execution of the command Edit+Add will open a dialog box “Adding layer” shown at figure 9-9.

The user should specify the name of the layer he adds and parameter value of “Partition” for this layer. As a rule, one and the same value (the one specified when creating a map) can be used for all map layers. For this purpose one should check the box Use partition of map. When necessary, the user can clear this box and specify individual value for layer partition. If the layer contains too many features, one should increase the partition, if there are few features – it's better to decrease the partition.
Adding feature type to the layer is performed by analogy. Before executing the command Edit+Add one type should be selected in any of the two panes of navigation windows, when the layer doesn't have any types – select a layer in hierarchical pane and activate the empty pane of feature type list (by clicking this pane).
In dialog box “Adding feature type” (figure 9-10) a name for the type which is added should be specified and one of five possible spatial categories should be selected for it.
