The page “Commands” of the customizing dialog box is shown at figure 12-3. This page enables determining the set of commands contained in each toolbar and in each pull-down menu.
Figure 12-3. Dialog box “Customize”, page “Commands”
The main part of the page is occupied by two panes each of which contains a hierarchical list of commands.
The left pane (By category) contains all the commands which can be performed by the system when working with the window being adjusted (in this case – with map browser window). The commands are grouped by concept categories (for example, Selection, Tools, etc.) which can coincide with the names of toolbars and pull-down menus or not. The general list of commands reflects functional capabilities of the system and cannot be changed by the user. It should be emphasized that in the present pane only commands themselves, not the method of calling them, are displayed. In the course of customizing, calling of some “unnecessary” commands can be turned off, but in the list By category these commands will remain.
For some commands a specific icon is provided (for example,
for the command Save or
for the command Info). For commands which don't have icons, a space is displayed in the list instead of the icon (for example, for commands Text or Edit from the category Feature). For all commands during the execution of which a nested menu is opened, a unified icon
is provided.
The right pane (Toolbars) allows distribution of commands from the left pane by available menus and toolbars, that is, specifying methods of calling commands. To do this it is necessary to drag the command from the left pane to the selected menu or toolbar located in the right pane holding down the left mouse button. Mouse cursor form shows to which places in the right pane the command can be placed (
), and to which it can't be placed (
). The commands which do not have icons and those with nested menus (icon
) can be placed only in the menu line (in any place of any menu not depending on command category), and the commands with a usual icon – in the menu, as well as in any toolbar.
The dragged command does not disappear from the left pane, that is why it can be placed in several places of the right pane (for example, in one or several menus and in one or several toolbars simultaneously). It will mean several ways of calling one and the same command. For example, for calling the dialog box “Customize” by default the system provides three equivalent variants: menu item Tools+Customize, menu item View+Toolbars+Customize or shortcut key F10.
To change the way of calling the command it can be dragged to another place of the right pane. To cancel the calling method, the command should be moved from the right pane back to the left one.
At the end of a list of commands by category there are several additional lines which are not commands:
The list Built-in Menus contains names of all pull-down menus which are present in the menu line by default (for map browser window these are Theme, Feature, Selection, etc.). A built-in menu can be located only in the menu line, and only in one copy. For every built-in menu the system specifies by default a set of commands. This set of commands can be changed, but it is always possible to return to the standard set. To do this you should right-click the built-in menu in the right pane and perform the context menu command Reset.
The line New menu permits locating new pull-down menus in the menu line. By default they receive names New menu1, New menu2 and so forth. To rename the new menu, it is required to select it in the right pane, call context menu and perform the command Rename.
The line <Separator> can be placed between commands of any menu or toolbar. When calling the menu, the separator will be displayed as a horizontal line separating menu items. Separator placed in the toolbar is displayed as a space between command buttons.
