A notion of feature displaying style for point features includes a map symbol, for line features – line style; for area features – boundary line style, fill and hatch styles; for text features – font and color, for monochrome images – color and transparency.

A flexible scheme of style inheritance allows determining for every map or theme component its specific style or using the style specified at a higher hierarchical level.
