Operating system Windows provides a convenient possibility to establish associations between different file types (to be more exact, between file extensions) and Windows applications responsible for processing files of the present type. In particular, during installation ObjectLand associates itself with GDB file extension, that is, it becomes responsible for processing GDB files with such extension. When the user browses the contents of a disk by means of Windows Explorer, for example, he can start ObjectLand by double clicking on the name of any file with GDB extension (or on a shortcut linked with such file). And immediately after ObjectLand startup, opening of the corresponding GDB is performed.
This startup method is very convenient because instead of two separate actions – ObjectLand start and GDB opening – the user can just make a double click on the necessary file or shortcut. However, in this case a problem connected with selection of open mode arises. Since “Open GDB” dialog box which contains checkboxes for selecting an open mode is not used, the system opens a more simple dialog box “Setting GDB open mode” shown at figure 5-3 instead.
Figure 5-3. Dialog box “Setting GDB open mode”
The box contains three checkboxes for selecting GDB open mode (its name and location on a disk are given at the top of the window). Besides, there is a checkbox Do not show this window later. If the user checks this box, by pushing OK the system recalls the specified open mode in its settings and in subsequent ObjectLand startup “via GDB file” will use the same open mode. In future it is possible to change the open mode or force the system to display the dialog of mode setting during startup again. To do this it is required to change the system settings accordingly (see chapter 8 “System parameters setting”).
