This page (figure 8-9) ensures a more secured way of determining the mode of using change file for recording changes entered by the user to GDB or shared library.

There is a potential danger of losing data in the change file which may occur in the case when the user opens GDB or shared library in the modes with and without change file, forgetting to perform changes consolidation (see chapter 6 “Operations with GDB”, subsection “GDB consolidation”) before switching from one mode to another. If an unconsolidated change file is present, the database is opened in the mode without change file and the data is changed, then the existing change file becomes invalid and it should be removed by operating system tools.
To decrease the possibility of the situation described above the system offers to set one of the two fixed modes of using the change file:: Never use or, on the contrary, Always use. If on the page “Change file” one of these modes is selected then when opening GDB or shared library the user will not have a possibility to change the mode (the corresponding checkbox will not be switched over). The same limitation will occur when setting default open modes for GDB (see subsection “Page “GDB opening”” in the present chapter) or shared library (subsection “Page “Shared library””).
If the user checks the radio button By user on the page “Change file”, he keeps a possibility to select the mode of using or not using the change file every time he opens GDB or shared library. In this case he should be especially careful not to lose the data in the change file.
The mode of using change file is selected separately for GDB and for shared library.
In case of shared work of several users with one and the same GDB or library, the administrator should take measures to coordinate modes of using the change file by different users.
