Adding a table to a layout

To add a table element to the layout the button of the mode toolbar should be pushed. The cursor takes the shape of a cross: . The user can indicate the place in the editing pane where the table should be located and its displaying sizes. For this purpose it is required to press the mouse button in one corner of the rectangle inside of which the table will be placed and release the button in the opposite corner of this rectangle. As the rectangle is increased, the system divides it by a dotted grid into cells of the same size thus determining the initial number of rows and columns in the table. There is no need to determine the sizes of the rectangle precisely when adding a table since later the user will have a possibility to change the total size of the table as well as the number of its rows and columns.

After building the rectangle the system opens a dialog box “Adding table” shown at figure 48-1.

The user should indicate in this dialog box firstly if the table being created in the layout should display data from some GDB query (or from a query of one of opened EDBs) or it will be filled in not depending on GDB table data. Secondly, the user specifies the quantity of rows and columns of the table being added.

Using the dialog box “Adding table” the user can quickly create and place to the layout a simple table of the specified size, an empty table, or the one linked with one of the queries of GDB or EDB. Further, when editing created table it will be possible to change the sizes of the table as well as its links with queries.

If the user does not plan to set a link with a query when adding a table, he should just indicate the number of rows and columns of the table in the pane Size and then push the button OK. Maximum possible values of the number of rows and columns are determined by the size of the layout page and the size of table cells. When adding a table to the layout all the cells have the width of 2 cm and the height – 0.5 cm, that is why, for example, it is possible to locate not more than 28.5 / 0.5 = 57 rows and 19.7 / 2 = 9 columns on the page of 28.5 cm ´ 19.7 cm. Nevertheless, when editing the table the user can increase the number of its rows and columns. To do this it is necessary to reduce either the sizes of cells or displaying scale of the table in the layout.

If the user wants to set a link with a query right when creating a table, the box Query should be checked. A list of all cataloged queries of the current GDB and opened EDBs from which it is required to select the necessary one is displayed in the pane under this checkbox.

The number of rows and columns of the table added to the layout can differ from the number of records and fields of a query accordingly. When counting rows and columns it should be taken into account that the row with names of query fields will be the first row of the table, and the column with numbers of query records – the first column of the table. For queries containing calculated fields one more row containing total values by query columns is added when the table is displayed.

Linking cells of the table being added with fields of query records is performed beginning from the top left corners of the table and query. If the number of records or the number of query fields does not correspond to the table sizes, either part of records or part of fields will not be displayed in the table, or, on the contrary, some table cells will remain unfilled.

If the box Adapt to query is checked, the system tries to change the specified number of rows and columns in such a way that they corresponded to the sizes of the query. If the query sizes exceed the maximum number of rows or columns, messages “Total records not fitting: …”, “Total columns not fitting: …” are displayed in the pane Sizes. In this case the best solution is probably to set a link with a query later and select which fields and records in particular should be displayed in the layout.

If the user pushes the button Cancel in the dialog box “Creating table”, adding of table is canceled.
