Layout page

When designing a layout the user places different elements within a rectangle called layout page. When creating a new layout the system sets page size equal to the size of the page of default system printer.

At the edges of the layout page there are margins which width is determined by the user. A part of display of layout elements which falls on the margins will not be printed, though this part is shown at the screen when editing the layout.

Most printers do not permit printing on edges of the sheet of paper. Width of non-printable areas depends on the model of the used printer. Thus, printed region of the layout is limited by the width of margins specified by the user as well as by the width of non-printable area of the page which depends on the printer.

The user can specify any size of the layout page. If the specified size exceeds the size of printer page, the layout page is divided into several pages which are printed separately and can be glued afterwards.

When locating the layout on several printer pages it is convenient to use printing with overlapping of pages. The overlapping region is a zone adjoining borders of the printer page and which should be printed on both neighboring pages. Usage of overlapping allows firstly avoiding non-printed strips at the joint of pages (the part of display which falls on non-printable area will be printed on the neighboring page due to overlapping) and secondly gives the possibility to glue printed pages in one page.

In the center of figure 45-1 there is a layout page marked for printing without overlapping of pages. The page occupies two printer pages and the upper part of two more pages. Red dashed line shows the borders of the page margins. Gray strips at the borders of printer pages are non-printable areas.

The corners of the figure show what will be actually printed on each of the four pages. One can see that some parts of layout display will not be printed since they fall into non-printable areas of pages.

At figure 45-2 a similar layout page is marked for printing with overlapping of pages. Specified sizes of overlapping are equal to the double width of non-printable area. If non-printed strips are cut at the edges of pages and then the remaining parts of pages are glued, the user will get the whole display of the layout.
