Themes

ObjectLand permits usage of display of any cataloged theme from the current GDB as one of the elements of the layout. Such a layout element keeps its link with the theme, that is, any subsequent changes of a map or theme affecting theme display will cause redrawing of layout element taking into account these changes. Such changes include, for example, editing map features, changing displayed fragment of a theme, changing style of components, turning on/turning off the filter, etc.

To add a theme element into the layout the user should push the button of the mode toolbar. The cursor takes the shape of a cross: . The user can indicate the place in the editing pane where the theme should be located and sizes of its display. To do this it is necessary to press the mouse button in one of the corners of the rectangle inside of which the theme will be located and release the button in the opposite corner of this rectangle. In fact, after selecting a particular cataloged theme, one of the sides of the rectangle can be automatically reduced to keep the proportions of the displayed fragment of the theme. The bottom left corner of the theme element will keep its position where the user put it.

After building the rectangle the system opens a dialog box “Adding/Properties of theme” (figure 47-1).

The set of properties in this dialog box is not wide. The thing is that only the properties which characterize the theme as a layout element are presented here. Properties of a cataloged theme as GDB component are specified in the property dialog box with the same name which is opened differently: from the navigation window when the theme is selected (see chapter 15 “Properties of a theme and of its components”). These properties also affect display of the theme in the layout.

In the field Name the user can specify the theme to be displayed selecting it in the drop-down list of all cataloged themes of the present GDB. This list also includes a special value <None>. Selecting the empty theme enables the user to plan design of the layout before the necessary cataloged theme is created. It is possible to add a legend and a scale bar for the empty theme in the layout (they will necessarily also be empty). All empty elements of the layout are displayed as gray rectangles. The user can replace the empty theme by any existing GDB theme at any time.

If the box Show border is checked, a rectangular frame will be displayed around the theme in the layout. The line style of this frame can be selected after pushing the button Border style.

The checkbox Fix scale indicates that the scale of displaying the theme in the layout should be specified in this very property dialog box, in particular – in the field located to the right of the checkbox. In this case it is impossible to change the scale just resizing the theme element in the window of layout editor using a mouse.

The scale is expressed in map units per 1 centimeter of the layout (on a printing device), it is in no way connected with the layout displaying scale in the editing pane.

If the box Draft is checked, the theme is displayed in the editing pane as a rectangle of gray color with the name of the cataloged theme in the center of it. The draft mode permits considerable reduction of time for displaying the layout page on the screen, that is why it is very convenient in the course of designing the layout when it is necessary to move elements, changing their sizes and so on quite often.

One shouldn't be afraid that the theme will be displayed to a printing device as a gray rectangle if the user forgets to turn off the draft displaying mode before printing. In fact, this mode affects only screen display, not printing.

If the user refuses to specify theme properties (for example, pushes the button Cancel), adding of the theme is canceled.

The created theme becomes selected element of the layout.
